HISTORY
At Chanos, we believe walking should be a natural and mindful experience. Our handcrafted huaraches are inspired by Mexican tradition and the barefoot philosophy, offering minimalist footwear that respects the natural shape of your feet and keeps you connected to the Earth.
Growing up, I always loved the feeling of the earth under my feet—grass, sand, you name it. But finding shoes that kept that natural connection was nearly impossible; everything felt too heavy or overpriced. On a trip to Copper Canyon, home of the legendary Tarahumara runners, a friend changed my path. He insisted on buying me a pair of tire sandals, even when I refused. “Keep them, toss them, do what you want,” he said. I didn’t touch them at first, but when I finally slipped them on, I was hooked. For three years, I wore out two pairs, loving how the recycled tire soles felt tough yet free, and knowing they were made from repurposed materials made each step feel even better. But I wanted more—genuine leather, expert craftsmanship, and that same durable tire sole, now with copper woven in from the start to ground us to the earth’s energy. I couldn’t find anything like it, so I partnered with artisans in Nuevo Casas Grandes to craft my own. Friends started asking for pairs, and that’s how this began. Reading Born to Run opened my eyes to why minimalist sandals matter—they let your feet move naturally, strengthening your feet and legs, reducing injury, and keeping you connected to the ground. Now, a year in, people are sharing incredible feedback—those with back injuries, knee pain, or other aches are finding relief, feeling less pain, and even resting better at night, which drives me to keep pushing forward. These sandals aren’t just footwear; they’re about health, freedom, and staying rooted to nature. I test every pair myself, hiking the rugged trails of Copper Canyon, but I also use them for everything—pickleball, drywall on job sites, work, play, weddings, dancing. They’re my everyday shoes now, built as tough as the land that inspired them.
